LAST CALL FOR TEACHERS TO TAKE EU WIDE
SURVEY ON ICT SUCCESSES IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS
How do Information and Communication technologies (ICT) make a
difference in primary schools in Europe? Have you successfully used ICT
in your school with children?
This is the last opportunity to share your
experience and be part of an EU-wide study conducted by European
Schoolnet on behalf of the European Commission.
The survey is aimed at to those working with ICT
in schools, teachers, head teachers, ICT-coordinators to investigate
the impact of ICT.

MORE THAN 6,000 PARTICIPANTS JOIN THE
INSAFE QUIZ TO MARK LAUNCH OF SAFER INTERNET DAY
More than 6,000 10-15 year-olds across the world took part in the
Insafe Quiz Quest, which closed this week in preparation for the sixth
edition of Safer Internet Day. This year’s celebration on 10
February 2009, once again to be opened by the European Commissioner for
Information Society and Media, Viviane Reding, will be marked by
hundreds of national and local events in more than 50 countries .

EMINENT
CONFERENCE REPORT PUBLISHED
The EMINENT conference report highlights ideas and topics debated over
the two days of European Schoolnet's annual conference, which took
place in Rome on 4-5 December 2008.
The event was attended by 240 participants from
all over Europe and beyond, representing ministries of education,
industry partners, teachers and experts. Keynote speakers included Mike
Trucano of the World Bank and the conference was opened by Giovanni
Biondi, Chair of the EUN Steering Committee.

EDUCATION
LEADERS BRIEFING IN LONDON
The Education Leaders Briefing, which took place in London on 12-14
January 2009, was organized by Microsoft in collaboration with European
Schoolnet. The event took place in conjunction with the British
Education and Training Technology Show (BETT).
It brought together representatives of Ministries
of Education, policy advisors and education officers. European
Schoolnet chaired a session at the event on 21st Century Education
Policy and Research.

XPERIMANIA ACTIVITIES IN PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY:
"CHECK OUT THE PROPERTY"
Secondary school students aged 10-20 years old, in groups of maximum
two or three, are invited to participate in the ‘Check out
the property!’ competition. Submissions uploaded before 30
April 2009 will be evaluated and the best entries will be awarded with
a personal media player for each student and a stipend for their school
to be spent on scientific classroom resources.

XPERIMANIA CHAT IN FRENCH: HOW ARE CHEMICALS USED IN ART RESTORATION?
How can we preserve pieces of art for future generations? How is
chemistry used to help prevent the deterioration of old art works? In
the Xperimania chat “How are chemicals used in art
restoration?” on 5 February at 14.00 CET students can put
these questions to Mrs Myriam Serck-Dewaide, the Director General of
the Belgian Royal Institute of Artistic Heritage (Institut Royal du
Patrimoine Artistique. The chat language will be French.

STELLA PROJECT BOOSTS SCIENCE EDUCATION IN EUROPE
The STELLA project aims to foster better science education in Europe.
In 2009, the STELLA team is creating a set of guidelines for
documentation and transferability of good practices, which is an issue
currently being debated in many countries.
The guidelines are targeted to teachers, decision
makers, school authorities and school heads and will be disseminated
both at national and European level. The STELLA portal, which brings
together interested stakeholders, aims to collect science education
practices all over Europe.

BRIDGING INDUSTRY AND SCIENCE EDUCATION: KEY TO EUROPEAN INNOVATION
In December 2008, PlasticsEurope published an
interview with Marc Durando, European Schoolnet’s Executive
Director.
The interview focused on the efforts and current
strategies by European industry to make science teaching more
attractive in schools. PlasticsEurope is European
Schoolnet's partner in the FutureEnergia project to
raise young people awareness about energy efficiency.

THE WINNING DATA PROTECTION DAY VIDEOS
With 16 European participating countries, 77 videos submitted in two
months and more than 25,000 daily visits on the website (www.dataprotectionday.eu),
the Data Protection Competition has closed successfully on 28 January
2009 which marks Data Protection Day .

CONGRATULATIONS
TO THE EUROCOMPETITION FINALISTS!
The finalists of the Eurocompetition (www.eurocompetition.net),
a poster competition to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the euro, are
now published! From 15 September to 31 December 2008 over 1,800
schoolchildren from the euro area took part in this online competition
organised by the European Commission.

DEVELOPMENT
YOUTH PRIZE 2008-2009: CREATIVITY MEETS AFRICA
Human development in Africa is the challenging topic of the Development
Youth Prize, which closes end of May 2009. The European competition
invites students aged 16 - 18 to show their creative views on Africa -
authors of the most original submissions will win a trip to Africa! The
competition website is online and open to new submissions.

SCHOOLS REGISTERED FOR SPRING DAY FOR EUROPE 2009
Agrupamento Biotehniški center Naklo - Srednja
šola, in Slovenia, is the 1000th school to join the Spring
Day for Europe 2009 campaign. As part of the European Year of
Creativity and Innovation, the event aims to encourage schools to
organise many debates and activities focusing on Europe and creativity.
The campaign is expected to raise schools’ interest from 25
March to 9 May 2009.
