NEW TEACHERS' WEBSITE DELIVERS STRONG
LESSON IN E-SAFETY
European Schoolnet and 14 leading industry actors including mobile
operators, social networking sites, internet and mobile providers, have
launched TeachToday.eu, a website to help teachers encourage children
to use the internet and mobile technology responsibly and safely.
As young people are proactive members of online
communities, it is important to provide them with the knowledge and
skills needed to behave responsibly and to gain the maximum benefits
from ICT.

eTWINNING CAMP 2008 CELEBRATES
INTERCULTURAL DIALOGUE
Organised by the Central Support Service for eTwinning in collaboration
with European Schoolnet, the eTwinning camp 2008 took place in Vimeiro,
Portugal, from 7 to 10 May 2008, gathering 103 participants from eight
different European countries - 18 teachers and 85 pupils from 7 years
old to more than 19.

QUESTIONS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN POLICY-MAKERS AND POLICY-SHAPERS
EUN’s Policy and Innovation Committee (PIC) met in the UK on
16 May 2008 to discuss how to improve the relationship between
policy-makers and policy-shapers in the decision-making process. The
meeting, hosted by BECTA, the UK national agency for ICT in learning,
took place at their office in Coventry, and was a joint PIC-P2V meeting.

eTWINNING
WORKING GROUP MEETINGS
All three eTwinning Working Groups brought together members of the
Central Support Service (CSS) and of the National Support Services
(NSS) from 20-22 May 2008, in Brussels, to discuss the eTwinning Portal
(WG1), Pedagogical Issues (WG2), and Communication and Networking
(WG3). As the 2007-2008 school year is ending, it was also an
opportunity to discuss the success and challenges the three thematic
areas have encountered over the year.

SPRING DAY SCHOOLS CELEBRATE EUROPE DAY
Most of the Spring Day schools have produced reports on their special
events which were dedicated to Europe Day. The reports consist of
pictures, texts and drawings. The purpose of the events was to raise
awareness about our common cultural values and how young Europeans
celebrate similarities and embrace diversity.

ICLASS HANDBOOK PRESENTED AT FINAL CONFERENCE
As part of the iClass project which comes to an end in June, European
Schoolnet has produced a booklet to inform policy makers, researchers
and practitioners about the project’s results. The
publication titled ‘The Future of Learning? Results from the
iClass project’ invites readers to know more about
personalisation of education and how self regulation can help motivate
learners.
The publication was presented at the iClass
symposium which was organised in Brussels on 26-27 May 2008.

ICLASS PLATFORM DEMONSTRATED IN LITHUANIA AND AUSTRIA
In recent months, European Schoolnet has organised two more validation
workshops as part of the iClass project. Some 30 teachers and 20
students participated in the two workshops organised in Lithuania on
10-11 April (for teachers) and 19-20 May 2008 (students and teachers).
The Austrian workshop was the second organised at
the Tourism School in Badhofgastein and welcomed for the first time
students and teachers. The Lithuanian event took place at the Teachers
Professional Development Centre near Vilnius.

SUCCESSFUL
DEVELOPMENT YOUTH PRIZE 2007 COMPETITION
The DYP 2007 competition closed on 31 March 2008 with a total amount of
over 1,100 eligible contributions from 27 European member countries.
Evaluation is carried out by experts in development education, art and
media until mid-June. Afterwards the finalists will be announced on the
portal. All of them and their teacher will be invited to the
prize-giving event that will take place in mid November in Strasbourg.

TAKE
PART IN THE EUROCOMPETITION
European Schoolnet, in cooperation with the European Commission DG
Economic and Financial Affairs, is organising the Eurocompetition.
Young people aged 10-14 years old from the euro area are invited to
participate by creating a poster expressing their feelings and thoughts
about the 10 years of the currency and its future.

ASIA-EUROPE
FOUNDATION AND EUN SIGN MoE
European Schoolnet and the Asia-Europe Foundation have signed a
Memorandum of Understanding identify synergies and cooperation areas.
This partnership will allow both organisation to share expertise,
exchange information and develop cooperation activities for schools,
exchange on national policy initiatives and foster the development of
networks of schools between European and Asian education systems.

GAMES
IN SCHOOL
European Schoolnet has just launched in close cooperation with the
Interactive software federation of Europe (ISFE) the first European
study on the use of games in schools. 28 countries will be screened and
a more detailed analysis will focus on Denmark, Estonia, Spain, France,
Italy, Lithuania, Austria and the United Kingdom.

STEERING
COMMITTEE WELCOMES TWO NEW APPLICANT COUNTRIES
The EUN Steering Committee meeting on 22 April 2008 approved the
application to the EUN consortium of two more countries for a full
membership: Georgia and Turkey. Once negotiation finalised with these
two new members, European Schoolnet will count 31 countries including
Germany and Slovakia as observers. Negotiations with Latvia to join the
Consortium are underway.

NEW
FACES AT EUN OFFICE
Nathalie Scheeck and Agueda Gras-Velazquez have recently joined the EUN
office. Nathalie in March 2008, as Translation coordinator, and Agueda
in May 2008, as Maths, Science and Technology coordinator. This latest
will be in charge of the management of science projects including
INSPIRE and Xperimania.
