CELEBRATE ACHIEVEMENT WITH TECHNOLOGY:
ENTER THE 2007 ELEARNING AWARDS
The seventh eLearning Awards competition is now open and schools are
invited to submit entries for the eLearning Awards 2007 that exemplify
the best use of ICT in education.
Entries are welcome from schools or teachers in EU
Member States, EEA Countries, EU Applicant Countries as well as
Switzerland and Israel. Entries can be made from now until 31 October
2007 online at http://elearningawards.eun.org.
This year’s sponsors include Young

RAISING
YOUNG PEOPLE’S AWARENESS OF PETROCHEMISTRY
European Schoolnet and the Association of Petrochemicals Producers in
Europe (Appe) are launching an ambitious new project to raise awareness
of petrochemistry among young people across Europe.
The project - Xperimania - proposes attractive
inquiry-based science teaching and learning activities for upper
primary and secondary schools.

DEVELOPMENT
YOUTH PRIZE 2007
The Development Youth Prize 2007 portal was launched at the
beginning of September and is now open for submissions.
The focus this year is on sustainable development
in Africa. Pupils from all 27 EU member states at the age 16-18 can
submit posters or multimedia presentations on three new themes: climate
change, water and energy, and sustainable tourism.

BRINGING
EUROPE’S 50TH BIRTHDAY TO SCHOOLS
On 3 September 2007, in partnership with the Museum of Europe, European
Schoolnet launched the “50 Years Together in
Diversity” school competition which aims to raise awareness
about European cultural values, the milestones of European integration
and the 50 years of unity in diversity.
The competition is intended to enhance and support
European citizenship education in schools, in the year when the
European Union celebrates its 50th anniversary.

ENERGY
IS OUR FUTURE GOES ON
Twelve nominees of the ‘Energy is our Future’
competition took part in a prize-giving ceremony organised at the
European Parliament in Brussels in September 2007.
The ceremony was chaired by EU Energy Commissioner
Andris Piebalgs. European Schoolnet and PlasticsEurope
will continue to develop the programme through new activities and a new
school competition in the 2007-2008 school year.

LAUNCH OF EUROPEAN eTWINNING PRIZES 2008
The 2008 edition of the eTwinning Prizes takes place between 17
September and 31 October 2007. During this period, schools can submit
online entries for the European eTwinning Prizes 2008. Finalists will
be announced in January 2008 and invited to attend a prize-giving
ceremony.

eTWINNING WEEKS 2007: ONLINE CAMPAIGN
To launch the new school year, the special “eTwinning Weeks
2007” are being organised to focus on encouraging schools and
teachers to get involved in eTwinning. Between 17 September and 19
October, special events, activities and prizes are taking place across
Europe.

CALIBRATE
SUMMER SCHOOL IN PORTOROZ
The Calibrate summer school took place on 21-24 August 2007 in
Portoroz, the beautiful seaside town on the Slovenian coast.
The workshop involved 62 teachers from six
countries participating in the project as well as representatives from
the University of Ljubljana (SI) and the Austrian Ministry of Education.

MELT
SUMMER SCHOOL IN TAMPERE
About seventy teachers from different European countries came to
Tampere, Finland, on 7-8 June 2007 for a two-day summer school on the
use of collaborative tagging and bookmarking methods for learning
resources. The summer school was organised as part of the MELT project
that looks into "metadata ecology", which is how user-given tags with
more structured metadata can help the discovery of suitable learning
resources across Europe.

The EUN Office organised two workshops at the second European
Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning (EC-TEL'07) which took place
on 18 September 2007 in Sissi, Crete, Greece.
The first workshop was on Learning Object
Discovery and Exchange (LODE'07) and the second on Social Information
Retrieval for Technology-Enhanced Learning (SIRTEL07).

CHARTER VOTED BY IMS MEMBERS
The First International Workshop on Learning Object Discovery and
Exchange (LODE'07) was held in Sissi, Crete, Greece on 18 September
2007 together with the second European Conference on Technology
Enhanced Learning (EC-TEL'07).
The event was organised by David Massart and
Jean-Noel Colin of European Schoolnet, 32 participants took part in the
discussions.

KOREAN
AGENCY FOR ICT IN EDUCATION VISITS EUN
A delegation from KERIS, the Korean Education and Research Information
Service, visited the EUN Office on 21 August 2007 to exchange and
discuss possible cooperation and synergies. The delegation was headed
by Dr Jung Sung Moo, Executive Director of the Education Information
Center at Keris.

MOE APPOINTS NEW HEAD OF ICT IN EDUCATION DIVISION
Jean-Yves Capul, a 50 year-old French civil servant, has just been
appointed as head of the French Ministry of Education’s ICT
in education division.
Jean-Yves Capul, who succeeds Benoit Sillard in
this position, was previously deputy director of editorial and
information resources in the Documentation française.
