STEERING COMMITTEE
MEETING IN BRUSSELS
European
Schoolnet’s Steering Committee had its first meeting of the
year in Brussels on 27 April 2006. It took place back-to-back with the
final conference of the P2P project on 26 April.
The Committee adopted the Work Programme for 2006
and the budget linked to it. The programme structure EUN’s
work for 2006 in three strands – School networking and
services, Policy and Practice and Interoperability and Content
exchange.
For 2006 EUN have a budgeted income of 3,763,000
EUR and costs of 3,662,000 EUR. The Steering Committee also adopted the
report on EUN’s work during the first quarter provided by the
EUN Office.

EUROPEAN LEARNING RESOURCE EXCHANGE
SEMINAR IN BRUSSELS
A
European Learning Resource Exchange (LRE) seminar took place in
Brussels on 23 March 2006. The event brought together close to 100
organisations with an interest in digital educational content.
LRE will build on EUN’s work in projects
such as CELEBRATE, eCOLOURS, LIFE, FIRE, CALIBRATE and the new MELT
project have all been consciously designed as part of a strategic
vision for a new Learning Resource Exchange.

SPRING
DAY CAMPAIGN REACHES NEW HEIGHTS
For the first time in its four-year history, Spring Day in Europe has
reached the 7,000 school milestone. The 7,000th to register on the
portal is a Romanian school.
Many public figures are taking part in the event,
in April three more Spring Day chats were held with Michel Delebarre,
President of the Committee of the Regions and Franco Frattini,
Commissioner for Justice, Freedom and Security and Alejo Vidal-Quadras
Roca, Vice-President of the European Parliament.

MYEUROPE
GROWS TO 5,000 SCHOOLS
A month before celebrating its sixth anniversary, myEUROPE has grown to
5,000 schools.
The 5,000th registered school is Ysgol Gynradd
Llanfyllin Primary School in Wales, the UK.
The myEUROPE project was launched in May 2000 to
celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration.

LIFE
WEBSITE ON INSIGHT
The LIFE project website was relaunched in March in a new refreshed
layout, it is now embedded within Insight, EUN’s Observatory
for new technology and education.
The LIFE site is the one-stop place to know more
about the project developments and news in the field of
interoperability. It complements Insight’s
‘Interoperability’ section and allows LIFE site
visitors to also connect to other section of interest on Insight.

EUROPEAN
SCHOOLNET KICKS OFF ELEARNING AWARDS 2006
European Schoolnet launched mid-April,
the eLearning Awards 2006 website.
EUN is organising the event for the 6th
consecutive year and this year the competition will culminate in a
ceremony that will take place during European Schoolnet’s
10th Year Anniversary celebration and EMINENT Conference in Brussels in
December 2006..

CALIBRATE
PROJECT MEETING IN BRUSSELS
The CALIBRATE project had its second full meeting on 21-22 March 2006
in Brussels. Since the project’s kick off meeting in October
2005, preparatory work has been carried out in order to start
connecting learning content repositories from Austria, Estonia,
Hungary, Lithuania, Poland and Slovenia.
The first operational version of the CALIBRATE
federation of repositories is on target to be completed in September
2006, thereby enabling up to 100 schools to participate in the first
validation exercise at the start of the new school year.

XPLORA
SCIENCE TEACHERS CONFERENCE
Xplora, EUN’s portal for science education within the Pencil
Project is organising a science teachers conference at CERN, Geneva.
The conference will take place on 15-18 June 2006 and will focus on
open source and ICT in science education, science teaching approaches,
the role of science centres in education and more.

ETWINNING
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS
Two Professional Development workshops were held in March 2006, one in
Prague, the Czech Republic on 23-25 March 2006 and in Athens on 6-8
April 2006. In total, more than 160 teachers attended the two workshops.

NEW
FACES IN EUN OFFICE
Jean-Noël Colin, Sofia Aslanidou and Ivo
Ší r joined the EUN Office in April.
Jean-Noël is EUN’s Chief Technology Officer. His
main responsibilities are to manage EUN’s technical platform
and work on EUN’s system architecture and technological
development.
Sofia’s main responsibilities is to be
Insafe web editor, she will also be in charge of the Insafe newsletter.
Ivo is mainly going to work for Xplora as a webmaster. The EUN Office
also welcomed two new interns: Stella Kefala has joined the Insight
team and Alain Niam for the translation team. .
